Composition & AnnotationsDesign Idea Examples

For this task, we will:

  • Create at least 3 design ideas
 

  • Present the chosen idea with annotations
 

  • Create a more detailed planning for your advertisement
 

Your grade will be based on the Assessment criteria posted on the worksheet.
 
Develop Design Ideas

When developing design ideas, you can create a composition in Google Drawings, Pixlr, etc. 

Composition

What is Composition? It is the relationship between images, text, and other visual elements on a page.

Advertisers often spend a lot of time thinking about what the audience will see first. We read words on a page from left to right. We also do this with images. Sometimes it can be important to put the text in the upper left-hand corner. Other times an image can be more important. Choices about composition (sometimes called layout) are made so that the advertisement has the most impact.

Impact is the effect something has on someone. If the composition is well done and exciting it will have impact and be interesting to the customer.

Annotations

When creating your advertisement design ideas, make sure that you include annotations.

tell the viewer what color the images, text and other visual elements will be

explain things that maybe aren’t clear

outline the advertising techniques and composition techniques used

Remember to use only creative commons images, photograph, or draw your own.

*You may find it easier to draw your ideas on paper, take a picture and send to your school email.

Design idea example #1

NGO: World Wildlife Fund

Rhetorical Appeal: Pathos: We are polluting, we need to stop it. Logos because it is telling a fact.

Advertising Techniques: Call to action and fear because people feel that they need to clean up the world.

Composition techniques: It has symmetry because text on 1 side and trash on the other, balance because it has symmetry, color – red is alerting.

Design idea example #2

NGO: World Wildlife Fund

Rhetorical Appeal: Pathos: Makes you feel guilty, sad and depressed. Logos: It’s telling us a true fact which is that the world will end up in trash if we don’t reduce it. 

Advertising Techniques: Call to action, fear because people are scared that the world will end up in trash.

Composition techniques: Color– 2020 is colorful and 3030 is black and white which is sad. Triangle– the middle tree, balance because it has something on each side. 

Develop Your Final Design

Communicate the overall visual appearance of your NGO advertisement to the customer.

Use the ColorZilla tool to pick a color from any webpage for use in other apps. The color hex number can be noted on your final design.

Below is an example of the visual appearance for a game design

Outline of overall visual appearance
I will use a lion and lion cub sprites to communicate my Lion cub adventure game.
My colors will mainly be warm brown and yellow tones to match my savannah theme.
Green tones will be used because these were generated in Adobe Kuler for visual balance
This final design also uses a Text Generator to create fun letters that match the African savannah theme.
